The fixed - outline floorplanning is well studied. For the fixed - outline floorplanning, an improved discrete particle swarm optimization algorithm using the particle representation of the se- quence of natural numbers is proposed and operations of the discrete particle swarm optimization algo- rithm are designed. The MCNC benchmark circuits are employed to verify the performance of the algo- rithm. The experimental results showed that the application of this improved discrete particle swarm optimization algorithm has high success rate in solving the fixed -outline floorplanning and it can effi- ciently tackle the problem.
