新兴市场企业试图通过逐渐加大自主研发以提升市场收益的竞争力,实现快速追赶,而此背景下研发强度是如何影响企业绩效至今并没有被充分揭示。本研究基于中国领先电子制造企业非平衡面板数据,在考虑IT投资强度和出口强度两个因素条件下,深入研究分析研发强度对企业绩效的影响模式。为了获得稳健的统计结果,本研究引入pooled-OLS和pooled-quantile两类回归检验技术进行对比分析。pooled-OLs回归展示了样本平均绩效水平上研发强度的影响,pooled-quantile回归描述了样本不同绩效水平上研发强度的影响。pooled-OLS回归结果表明,对中国电子制造业来讲,研发强度对企业绩效表现出稳健的显著正向促进作用;pooled-quantile回归更细致地揭示了研发强度对企业绩效作用的模式,表明研发强度对绩效越好的企业促进作用越强。
Firms in emerging market try to increasingly investment in the indigenous research and development (R&D) for improving the competitiveness of market profits, and realize quick catch-up. However, how R&D intensity influences on firm performance has not been explicitly untangled in this context. We have explored the relationship between R&D intensity and firm performance in the consideration of the participations and moderations of information technology (IT) investment intensity and export intensity using a unique unbalanced panel data set for the top China's electronic manufacturing firms during 2003-2007. In order to strengthen the statistical results, this study includes two major models to compare: pooled-OLS regression and pooled-quantile regression techniques. A series of pooled-OLS-based examinations focused on mean effects produce the robust evidence of a positive relationship between R&D intensity and firm performance in the China's electronic manufacturing firms. By pooled-quantile regression techniques portraying the relative importance of explanatory variables at different points of the performance distribution, we have shed light to the underlying in-depth relationship between R&D intensity and firm performance. We found that the R&D intensity shows the stronger impact on the better-performance firms.
