The interaction of Phenosafranine(PF), which features a phenazinyl group, with DNA was investigated by spectroscopy. The studies indicated that PF could intercalate into the stack base pairs of DNA. Intrinsic binding constants obtained by different spectral methods were consistent within experimental errors. The binding constants are of the order of 10^4L· mol^-1 in DNA base pairs, and the estimated binding sites are about 7 in DNA base pairs. The results of the studies on fluorescence quenching by anionic quencher KI also confirmed the intercalative binding of PF with DNA. This research proposed a new intercalation functional group to DNA-targeted drug design.
