The content and speciation of heavy metal (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) in soils from different functional zones (mineral, industrial and urban central zone) of Baise city were investigated. The results indicated that heavy metal content in soil from urban central zone was at clean level, and the potential ecological risk was slight. However, heavy metal content in soils from mining and industrial zone exceeded the soil background of Baise and the soils have been polluted seriously. The assessment of potential ecological risk revealed that heavy metal in soils from mineral and industrial zones possessed very high potential ecological risk and the potential effect factor to ecological environment was Cd. There were similarity and dissimilarity in speciation of heavy metal in soils from different functional zones. The content of exchangeable Cd was relatively high, accounted for 18.2%-29.5% of the total concentration. Mn was present mainly in Fe-Mn oxides form and residual state. As, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in soil were present mainly in the residual state which accounted for more than 70% of the total concentration.
