Acorn barnacles are widely distributed in marine environments around the world, and cause serious problems on ships, docks, seawater pipelines, aquaculture facilities and offshore structures by secreting highly viscous glue (barnacle cement) and attaching themselves firmly to almost underwater objects. The barnacle cement is a key to develop new antifouling technology, and provide a model for underwater adhesive study. The structure, properties and polymerization mechanism of barnacle cements are reviewed. Moreover, the prospects for future study on barnacle ce- ments are also presented.
