The development history of electromagnetic metallurgy has been elaborated, analyzed the principles for application of the electromagnetic field in continuous casting technology, and the developmental status of electromagnetic field technology in the electromagnetic stirring, electromagnetic brakes ,cold crucibles ,as well as in soft contact processes. The problems existing in the application of the electromagnetic field in continuous casting technology are analyzed, and the prospects for electro- magnetic metallurgy are presented.
