A novel ultraviolet corona discharge detection system using photomultiplier to measure ultraviolet light was applied to study the corona discharge performance along the surface of 110 kV composite insulators. When voltage applied on composite insulator was increased gradually, development status of composite insulators" surface corona discharge under different conditions (dry, clean, wet, polluted) was measured , and the corona discharge characteristics data, number and mean peak values of ultraviolet corona pulses under different applied voltages and surface conditions, were obtained. The results show that corona discharge on the dry surface of composite insulator develops along insulator from high voltage end to the ground, but the corona discharge developing status is random along insulator when the surface is under polluted and wet conditions, and that number and mean peak values of ultraviolet corona pulses can be used to quantify the detection of corona discharge and learn about the corona discharge status of composite insulators.
