Development history of the Mid-Infrared Instrument cryogenic system on the James Webb Space Telescope, which will be launched in 2018 ,was introduced in detail. The cryogenic system was based on a hybrid cryocooler consisting of a three-stage pulse tube precooler and a Joule-Thomson loop. It was shown that the traditional solid hydrogen or liquid helium dewars were gradually replaced by the hybrid cryo- coolers in space missions.
