Th22 cells are recently described as one of the inflammatory CD4+ T cells that express CCR6, CCR4, and CCR10. Th22 cells, separated clearly from those of Thl, Th2, and Thl7 cells, can produce IL-22, TNF- α, but do not express IL-17A, IL-4 or IFN-γ. Th22 cells may present within the epidermal layer in inflammatory skin diseases, which related to orchestrating innate immune responses, regulating keratinocyte defense mechanisms and enhancing epidermal wound healing. Furthermore, Th22 plays an important role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, hepatitis, and experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis. This article reviews the role of Th22 cells and its cytokine IL-22 in inflammatory immunity diseases.
