The HOG pathway is the most prominent pathway that allows S. cerevisiae cells to perceive and quickly respond to altered osmolarity, MAPK Hog1p is the key factor in the HOG pathway. Exposure of cell to the high osmotic stimuli leads to the specific activation of MAPK Hog1p and promotes a rapid nuclear concentration. Under stress conditions, Hog1p involved in various regulatory mechanisms, such as the regulation of stress-responsive gene and transient cell cycle arrest, to mediate the adverse environmental adaptability of yeast cells. Further study in MAPK Hog1p mechanisms could improve understanding of the stress-activated mitogen protein kinase signal pathway in mammal.
