The preparation of ultrafine CaCO3 particles from a solution reaction between CaCl2 and NaaCO3 in a novel tube-in-tube microreactor is described. The effects of varying different factors such as flow rate, reactant concentration, micro-pore size and mixing distance were investigated in detail. The sizes and morphologies of particles prepared using the microreactor were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and compared with those of a material prepared by a direct precipitation method. The results showed that the mean particle diameter decreased with increasing total flow rate and concentrations of the reactants. The mixing distance had no significant effect on the particle size. Furthermore, it was found that the particles prepared using the microreactor had a mean diameter of 0.89 μm with a narrow size distribution, while the particles obtained using direct chemical precipitation under the same conditions had a broad distribution of particle size in the range 8 - 11 μm.
