This paper addresses the problem of development of Windows XP embedded (XPE) operating system (OS). In order to enhance security and stability of XPE OS, three kinds of configuration methods of enhanced write filter (EWF) protection, including DISK-BASED, RAM-BASED, and REG-BASED, are introduced, which can protect OS from writing. According to practical need, however, like modification of some OS parameters, the OS under non-writable condition can be made writahle and modified easily by using EWE API (application programming interface) functions. To demonstrate its technical value, an application of portable dynamic signal analysis instrument based on XPE is presented.
