The background, the basic idea and the recent progress of flexible spectrum optical networks are introduced; the significance of researching network survivability in flexible spectrum optical networks is analyzed; the research status quo and the latest research development on network survivability in flexible spectrum optical networks are overviewed; the existing problems are discussed and some directions in the later research of network survivability in flexible spectrum optical networks are pointed out, especially the network congestion avoidance should be considered in designing the survivability mechanism of flexible spectrum optical networks.
