Marital violence,a prevalent problem in the spousal relationship,has its psychological,social and historical roots and is closely related to the issue of female consciousness.In her short stories "Runaway", "Dimensions", "Fathers", "Love of a Good Woman" and " Meneseteung",Alice Munro traces marital violence in different periods of the Canadian history and explores its influence on her heroines.This article analyzes these stories to examine the abusive husbands' physical and mental violence against their wives and,moreover,investigate the role of social and legal institutions in helping both the victims and victimizers.Marital violence is a key factor in the patriarchal suppression of female independent consciousness,the analysis reveals,while the intervention of public institutions can effectively raise female consciousness and help women achieve independence.
