Geographic Information System（GIS） is an important technology to carry out traffic planning and management in ITS.On the basis of summarizing current application situation of traffic field with GIS,the paper analyzed some critical problems such as establishment of traffic map database and data analysis and so on,which must be dealt with in the traffic field.Finally the paper forecasts several aspects of application from urban road design,vehicles induction,urban traffic prediction,urban traffic facilities management in the transportation planning and management with GIS.
