consisting of sin The physi gle-negative cal mechanism of the surface states in multilayered structures metamaterials was investigated by using a simple resonant cavity model. It is indicated that the surface states and their corresponding tunneling transmission modes appear when the resonant condition is satisfied. Such resonant condition depends on the phase changes inside the resonant cavity. Taking a six-layered single-negative structure based on the resonant cavity model as an example, the generation and distribution of the surface states were investigated. The study offers an effective method for designing metamaterial devices with novel electromagnetic localizing and tunneling properties.
