A study was conducted to investigate the contents of heavy metals(Cu, Zn, Pb and Cr) in the soil around coal gangue dump(Dama Mine, Jiaozuo, China). The contents of Cu and Zn in native plants around coal gangue dump were determined to assess the metal absorption and accumulation characteristics in these plants. The results showed that the soil was polluted by Zn and Cu. Zanthoxylum bungeanum and Phragmites australis had a strong ability to absorb Cu. The bioconcentration factor for Cu of the Phragmites australis root system was greater than 1. The translocation factor of Ixeris denticulata and Rumex acetosa for Cu were greater than 1. In addition, the bioconcentration factors of the 17 plant species for Zn were not over 1. Only the translocation factor of Cirsium setosum for Zn was greater than 1.
