The interoperability between UMTS and IEEE 802.11 WLAN brings new challenges for realizing safe and fast vertical handoff techniques. Vertical handoff operations must minimize time delay to ensure the quality of network services while guaranteeing network security. Based on an analysis of the WLAN-UMTS vertical handoff authentication protocol, a set of improved authentication and re-authentication mechanisms is proposed. By adding and changing authentication parameters and signaling interaction, these mechanisms can reduce signaling traffic and the authentication delay of vertical handoffs between WLAN and UMTS, with enhanced authentication security.
