As a host model for pathogens, Dictyostelium discoideum has been studied in following fields: the use of Dictyostelium wild-type cells as screening system for virulence of pathogens and their corresponding mutants; the use of Dictyostelium mutant cells as identifying host susceptibility and resistance to infection; the availability of host cell markers, the completion of the genome project, and the interaction of signaling pathways between host and pathogens, which qualified Dictyostelium for the study of fundamental cellular processes of pathogenesis.
