The synthestic application of iodine used as a Lewis acid catalyst is reviewed, including electrophilic and nucleophilic reactions, multi-component reactions as well as those for complicated compound synthesis. These iodine-catalyzed reactions are cheap and commercially available and proceeded facilely, mildly, cleanly, in high yields along with high chemo- and regio-selectivities.
