Grice＇ s theory of meaning offers a clear conceptualization of unnatural meaning and incorporates intention into discourse analysis. An analysis of Othello based on the theory discloses that Iago＇ s discourse strategy depends on his adept manipulation of unnatural meaning. To pursue his goal of vengeance, he entraps Othello by means of con- cealing his discourse intention, transmitting false intention and substituting circumstantial evidence for primary one. This analysis illustrates the significance of Grice＇ s theory of meaning in dramatic discourse study, particularly in the exploration of characters＇ motivation and discourse strategy.
