The establishment and development of the biochemical models in enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) process were described, with focus on the Mino model involving phosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs). The matter to which attention should be paid in comprehension of the models is that all the proposed biochemical models only try to explain some biochemical changes and phenomena occurred in EBPR community (e. g. the uptake and hydrolysis of polyphosphate, and the synthesis and reutilization of PHA). In addition, these models also assume that all PAOs share the same metabolic attributes. Therefore it cannot be restricted by these models, even though they are helpful to understand the whole EBPR process. All questions can be solved only by the final success of the pure culture of PAOs.
