Large numbers of microfossils -including acritarchs and filamentous algae-have been found recently in Baicaoping Formation shales at the Luoquancun section in Ruzhou, Henan Province, obtained from palynologieal macerations and petrological thin sections. This discovery expands the range of their distribution and has provided new material for detailed study. Although abundant, diversity is low with only three taxa occurring in the material: the reticulate acritarch Dictyosphaera delicata, the spinose acritarch Shuiyousphaeridium pilatum sp. nov. , and an alga-Taeniatum sp. They are similar to acritarch assemblages previously reported from the Shuiyougou and Maijingou sections in the Baieaoping (and Beidajian) formations of the Ruyang Group in Yongji county of Shanxi and Mianchi county of Henan, respectively. Generally the microfossil assemblages have been considered to indicate a Mesoproterozoie or early Neoproterozoic age for the Ruyang Group. According to our morphological analysis and comparison with assemblages from the Torridon Group of northwestern Scotland, we support an early Neoproterozoic rather than Mesoproterozoic age assignment.
