By probing the imaging mechanism of silver halides photographic materials, two R&D strategies toward highly sensitive photo-chemical imaging systems were discussed: signal amplification through development, and photo-initiated chain reactions. Those photochemical re- actions, in which the products could either shift the active exposure wavelength of reactants or ef- fectively catalyze some chemical reactions, pave the way for designing photo-chemical imaging materials with chemical amplification functionality. Furthermore, on the basis of Lambert-Beer's law, we deduced the formulas for estimating the photosensitivity of color-generating type photo- sensitive materials. This theory is valuable for the design of non-silver photographic materials and for recipe optimization.
