Wolbachia are maternally inherited obligatory intracellular bacteria widely found in arthropods and nematodes. These bacteria are transmitted through the cytoplasm of eggs to their progeny. Wolbachia infection is associated with a variety of reproductive anomalies in the host, including cytoplasmic incompatibility, parthenogenesis induction, male sterility, feminization and fertility modification. Such host manipulations enhance Wolbachia transmission among their hosts widely. The host reproductive manipulation, horizontal transfer, Wolbachia gene and its application are reviewed.
