The current study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary vitamin E supplementation on development of reproductive organs and serum reproductive hormone levels in Hu male lambs. A total of 30 animals which had same genetic background and similar body weight of22.63±1.41 kg were averagely divided into 3 groups. They were housed in individual pen and had free access to water. The basal diets consisted of 5:5 forage to concentrate ratio. Lambs in control group were only fed with basal diets, while in treatment groups 200 IU/d and 2 000 IU/d vitamin E were respectively added in diets. The experimental period lasted for 120 days, including a 15 days adaption for diets and environments. The blood samples were obtained from jugular vain of all animals to determine the reproductive hormone levels at the end of the experiment. The scrotum length and width of lambs were also measured at that time. Lambs were slaughtered after the experiment and testis tissues were taken out for weighing, followed by measurement of testicular length, width and girth and volume calculation. The results showed as follows, the scrotum length and width of Hu lambs in vitamin E added groups were significantly increased compared with control group. Dietary vitamin E supplementation tended to increase the testis weight and testicular width of Hu male lambs, but had no obvious effects on testicular length, girth and volume. No differences were observed in serum reproductive hormone levels of animals in all groups. It was concluded that dietary vitamin E supplementation could improve the development of reproductive organs in Hu male lambs, but had no significant effects on serum reproductive hormone levels.
