Providing ＂physical product and/or services＂ integrated solutions to customers becomes a trend,which is the new stage for service--oriented modular design. The paper analyzed the status of service--oriented modular design firstly, and differentiated the traditional physical products with the integrated product and services mode （generalized product）. Then the modular design methods of gen- eraliaed product was summarized and presented. Finally, the possible research directions for service-- oriented modular design were discussed, including personalized design, eco--design and smarter de- sign.
