Contemporary lay Buddhists played a very important role both in terms of charity ideas and in terms of charity practice in society. By making an anlysis of the organization pattern, charity function, and operation model of groups of Shanghai lay Buddhists during the Republic of China （1912 -1949）, this paper reveals the important roles and features of comemporary lay Buddhists in social charitable functions. Thus, the paper provides successful experience and useful reference for the development, improvement and management of the current nongovernmental religious organizations and their social charitable functions.
