Purpose To assess brain venous phase values(Δφ) change with age, gender, and location using susceptibility weighted imaging(SWI), and to explore the correlation between iron depositions in nuclei and venous oxygen concentration in healthy volunteers. Materials and Methods Fifty-six healthy volunteers underwent SWI examinations. Filtered phase imaging were acquired with signal process in neuroimaging, and the Δφwere measured in bilateral basal vein(BV), deep middle cerebral vein(DMCV), internal cerebral vein(ICV), superior thalamostriate vein(STV), respectively, and compared the Δφ values between the female and male volunteers, and between left and right sides. In addition, the phase value of bilateral heads of caudate nucleus(HCN), globuspallidus(GP), putamen(PUT), thalamus(THA), substantianigra(SN), red nucleus(RN) were measured in all subjects, and analyzed the correlation between the Δφ of brain veins and deep gray nucleis. Results In healthy volunteers, the Δφ of DMCV was lower than that of BV, ICV and STV(P〈0.05); the Δφ of ICV was higher than that of the other veins(P〈0.05). There were no significant differences in the Δφ between BV and STV(P〈0.05). There were no significant differences in the Δφ between male and female or right and lift(P〈0.05). No correlation of BV, DMCV, ICV and age in the Δφ(P〈0.05). The positive phase correlations were found between veins(BV, DMCV and STV) and deep gray nuclei(HCN, PUT and GP)(P〈0.05). Conclusion The Δφ in cerebral veins which reflects the blood oxygen content is not age-dependent without gender or side differences in healthy people. The Δφ of cerebral veins is related with the phase of the deep brain nuclei which reflects iron deposition.
