Heavy metal concentrations of surface soils taken from 44 parks in Shanghai urban area were studied. The results showed that the average concentrations of Pb, Zn, Cu and Cr were 55.1 mg kg^-1,198.5 mg kg^-1, 44.6 mg kg^-1 and 77.0 mg kg^-1. Based on the criteria of background concentrations, more than a half of the parks were lightly polluted, 9 parks were medium -polluted and 7 parks were polluted seriously on Nemerow N L polluted indexes. The spatial distribution of the heavy metals were as follows : the average concentrations of Pb, Zn and Cu were in tiptop in the parks beside the inner ring, and the highest average concentration of Cr was located between the outer ring and the inner ring. The heavy metals in the seriously pollated soil of the parks might may come from the traffic and industry, and they were not correlated to the time of setting up the parks significantly.
