Voltage-gated sodium channels are the basic ion channels for neural excitability, and crucial to the resting potential and the generation and propagation of action potential in neurons. Previous studies indicated that voltage- gated sodium channels played a central role in the generation and propagation of pain in nervous system. Recent studies proved that voltage-gated sodium channels Navl.7, Navl.8, Navl.9 and Navl.3 had close relationship with pain in nervous system. The present study will review the structure, types of the voltage-gated sodium channels in nervous system, as well as its relationship with pain.
