The impacts on human society of the past climate change in China is a frontier problem of historical geography research. Among all the dynasties in Chinese history, study on climatic impact in the Qing dynasty is the most systematic and fruitful. In this paper, the research progress of social impacts of climate change in the Qing dynasty is reviewed from four main aspects: agricultural produc- tion, economy, population, and social upheaval. Furthermore, the social impacts of climatic ex- tremes, and the climatic factors in important historical events are discussed. The features and advan- tages of the previous research could be concluded as follows: plentiful and substantial quantitative re- search, multiple spatial and temporal scales, and the exploration of process and mechanism how cli- mate change impacted human society. On this basis, a perspective analysis on the research trend is made: (1) the chain of interaction between climate and society would be further improved; (2) region- al integrated research would be more emphasized; (3) cross--disciplinary research would be further promoted.
