Resveratrol is a kind of polyphenolic compounds, which appears in more than 70 species of plant, such as grape, peanut, and Polygonum cuspidatum. The paper reviews the biological characteristics of resveratrol, including the molecular structure, source, absorption and metabolism. The biological effects of resveratrol, including cancer prevention, cardioprotective effect, the suppression of inflammation, neuroprotective effect, phytoestrogen action, and treatment of severe shock are also discussed
