In order to make a deep understanding of the existing problems about strength reduction method, the proposal, development and use of the strength reduction method were studied and summarized. Several aspects of the research progress and problems including the theoretical concepts, the position and orientation of failure plane of slopes and the numerical analysis method based on strength reduction were overviewed. The deficiencies in the rationality of the strength reduction method used to analyze layered soil and slope with structures, the slope failure criterion and influence factors of safety factor were emphatically commented. Some suggestions on further study of strength reduction method and its application were proposed.
