Free span by local scour is the chief factors leading to invalidation of submarine pipeline. Under the action of uniform current or wave, mechanism and critical condition about onset of local scour around submarine pipeline which is laying on seabed are illuminated. Meanwhile, under the action of steady current or wave, mechanism of 2D local scour, flow-pipe-soil coupling and 3D local scour underneath submarine pipeline laying on seabed are analyzed and summarized.
