Triclosan (TCS) and triclocarban (TCC) are broad-spectrum antimicrobial agents used in personal care products. They have become ubiquitous in aquatic environment due to its wide use. However, information concerning their toxicities to amphibians is limited. This study aimed to investigate acute toxicities of TCS and TCC to Pelophylax nigromaculatus tadpoles and Xenopus laevis tadpoles. P. nigromaculatus (Gosner stage 26) and X. laevis (NF stage 46) at the first tadpole developmental stage were exposed to series of concentrations of TCS and TCC. Median lethal concentrations (LC50) for 24 h, 48 h, 72 h and 96 h were calculated. We found that 96 h-LC50 for TCS to P. nigromaculatus tadpoles and X. laevis tadpoles were 441 μg·L^-1 and 280 μg·L^-1, respectively, while 96 h-LC50 for TCC to P. nigromaculatus tadpoles and X. laevis tadpoles were 252 μg·L^-1 and 217 μg·L^-1, respectively. The data show that TCS and TCC have relative high toxicity to P. nigromaculatus tadpoles and X. laevis tadpoles, with higher toxicity to the latter. The toxicity of TCC to tadpoles is slightly higher than that of TCS.
