The product family design based on common product platform is an available means for mass customization. The research status of common product platform was summarized from the following aspects： the platform development and design; platform evaluation methods; and platform application in practice. Basing on the above, the deficiency of existing relevant research was analyzed and the developing trend of the present product platform was discussed.
