A matrix analysis of the teacher talk and student talk on videos of senior middle school English teachers reveals that the following problems still exist in English teaching： larger proportion of teacher talk than that of student talk, unbalanced use of open/closed questions, more frequently used direct influence than indirect influ- ence upon students, and low students＇ initiative talk in interaction. Therefore, it is advisable to renew teaching phi- losophy of the teachers to give prominence to students＇ subjectivity in class, to improve the interaction in class to stimulate students＇ active thinking, to increase the use of indirect influence for a harmonious teacher-students rela- tionship to motivate students, and to ensure smooth transition of different teaching sections to enhance the efficiency of English classroom teaching.
