A simple method is presented to generate multipartite entanglement of the W type with trapped ions.In the scheme,N ions are simultaneously excited by a red sideband laser,and an N-partite symmetric or(N + 1)-partite asymmetric W state can be created in a single step.In principle,the number N can be arbitrarily large.Besides,the more ions that are involved,the less time it will take to generate the desired state.
