A CFD-DEM coupled numerical model is established based on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and discrete element method (DEM). The three-dimensional CFD-DEM coupled numerical model is used to simulate the interaction between solitary waves and gravel breakwater under different conditions, which validates the sheltering effect among the discrete particles and the deformation process of breakwater structure made of discrete sphere forced by solitary waves. The simulation results are in accordance with the expectation and the laws of physics, which reveals the effectiveness of the coupled numerical model and the simulation precision. The CFD-DEM model can provide a very effective research method to further investigate relative issues in this kind of coastal engineering.
