The present study was designed to investigate how the written segmental and suprasegmental information influence vocabulary recognition under the control of the context. The subjects in the study were adults whose mother language was Chinese.A self-paced,reading paradigm was used,in which participants read sentences by pressing a key each time they wanted a new one to appear. The result showed:the segmental and suprasegmental information affected the lexical accessing from the early stage of sentence processing, both in highly constrictive context or lowly constrictive context. The suprasegmental information affected the lexical accessing earlier than the segmental information in highly constrictive context;while in the lowly constrictive context, there was no that effect. The results supported the implicit prosody hypothesis.Suprasegmental information had an important influence on sentence processing, and the interactions between the written prosodic information and lexical bias also occurred in the early stage of sentence processing. The strength of contextual restrictions influenced the processing time course of segmental and suprasegmental information.
