The biological function of a new human M 15,000 selenoprotein (Sep15) identified in 1998 is still unknown, but evidence has shown that this protein may involve in tumorigenesis with redox reaction. Examination of the available cDNA sequences for this protein revealed two polymorphisms at positions 811 (C/T) and 1125 (G/A) located within the 3 '-UTR. These two polymorphisms may influence the function of Sec insertion sequence (SECIS) in a selenium-dependent manner,which may be related to risks of certain diseases.
