The paper systematically compares the efficiencies of industrial structure of the typical coal cities in the central of China with the changing rate and coefficient, deviation degree and shift-share index employed, and the results show that ： （ 1 ） It is significant for the changing rates of industrial structure of the typical coal cities in the past eight years. （2） The growth rates of secondary industry are significantly faster than those of urban economic growth for the all cities, while the growth rates of the tertiary industry are slower than those of economic growth （3） The deviation degrees of the industrial structure in 1997--2007 declines, but in the past five years have slowly been rising. （4）The shift-share indexes indicated that the efficiency and competitiveness dominated, but the Pert. formed efficiencies of the first and the third industry are different for the different cities. Meanwhile, there are differences for the corresponding sectors of the cities to promote regional economy as well as the regional economic structure and competitiveness.
