A Lake sediment core (L1) was collected from London Island at Ny-Alesund and concentrations of 16 elements including Hg, Se, Cd, As, Cu, Zn, P, Fe, Ti, K, Mn, Ca, Mg, Na, Si, A1 and TOC (total organic carbon) were analyzed. The results show that the enrichment of heavy metals (e. g. , Hg, Cd, Se) in the sections from 0 cm to 5 cm in the lake sediment was ascribed to the coal-mining in NyAlesund in the 20th century. However, the pollution of heavy metals is not serious. The levels of heavy metals under 5 cm in depth were contributed to natural depositation. The index of ICV and other elements' ratios were calculated as well. The results indicate that the weathering process in this region is very weak and climate change during the past several hundred years has undergone three stages from humid/warm, dry/cold to humid/warm.
