Lipid metabolism plays an important role in the occurrence and development of tumor cells. The normal cells provide energy through lipids in the circulation system, while tumor cells provide energy through their own de novo synthesis. This abnormal lipid metabolism not only supplies energy for tumor cells to rapidly proliferate, but also related lipids are involved in the important molecular signal pathways of tumor. Increasing studies have found that there is a close relationship between the lipid metabolism and the development of tumor cells. Some key enzymes in the process of lipid metabolism, such as fatty acid synthase (FASN) and stearoyl-coenzyme A desaturase 1 (SCD1), have become the research hotspot. The expressions of these key enzymes are significantly higher in tumor tissues than those in normal tissue, which indicates that these enzymes are expected to become new targets for tumor diagnosis and therapy. This review mainly describes the relationship between lipid metabolism and tumor development.
