As a unique species in genus Pseudois,Pseudois nayaur is endemic to the Tibetan Plateau and surrounding mountains, and this species is also the representative ungulate herbivore in this area. The taxonomic status of a specific population named dwarf blue sheep has been widely debated. In this study,26 samples including 5 dwarf blue sheep were collected from the distribution area. The DNA barcording and 8 nuclear microsatellite markers were chosen to discuss the phylogenetic relationships among dwarf blue sheep and different geographic populations of P. nayaur, and to study the evolutionary status of dwarf blue sheep in genus Pseudois. The results showed that gene flow occurred between dwarf blue sheep and P. nayaur, and dwarf blue sheep should be classified as a specific population of Sichuan subspecies rather than a new species or a new subspecies. In addition, based on the results of the habitat selection and the ecological data,we speculated that the present dwarf blue sheep was probably in the early stage of separate evolution.
