Objective To investigate the expression of receptor for advanced glycation end products （RAGE） in peripheral blood from chronic hepatitis B patients. Methods ELISA was used to detect the levels of RAGE in serum from 50 patients with chronic hepatitis B and 22 healthy volunteers. The expression of RAGE mRNA and NF-κBp65 mRNA were detected in peripheral blood mononuclear cells （PBMCs） by reverse transeriptase polymerase chain reaction （RT-PCR）. The levels of TBil and PTA were examined with biochemical methods. Results 1. The expression of RAGE mRNA,NF-κBp65 mRNA and the level of RAGE in serum significantly upregulated in severe hepatitis patients and chronic hepatitis B patients, and all increased in unrecovered severe hepatitis patients compared with the recovered group. 2. There was a positive correlation between RAGE mRNA expression and NF-κBp65 mRNA level, also a positive correlation between RAGE mRNA expression and TBil, while a negative correlation between RAGE mRNA expression and PTA. The correlation between NF-κBp65 mRNA and TBil or PTA was consistent with the results. There was no correlation between RAGE expression in serum and TBil or PTA. Conclusion 1. The level of RAGE in serum and RAGE mRNA in PBMCs were highly expressed in chronic hepatitis B patients. 2. RAGE and NF-κBp65 may play an important role in the development of chronic hepatitis B.
