Human cytomegalovirus(HCMV)is a common, opportunistic pathogen.Following primary productive infection the virus is not completely eliminated from the immunocompetent host, but instead establishes a lifelong latent infection without detectable virus production. The HCMV genome is large and has the potential to express many gene products, and some of these may facilitate viral latency in the human host.Despite decades of research,we have little more than a cursory understanding of the molecular basis of HCMV latency and the expression of CMV latency-associated transcripts. This article will cover several aspects of HCMV latency, with a focus on current understanding of viral gene expression and functions during this phase of infection.
