The evaluation of the amount of swelling and shrinkage in expansive clays is a key problem needing to be urgently solved for the purposes of engineering construction in areas of expansive clay. This paper discusses a model for evaluating the amount of swelling and shrinkage of expansive clay based on set pair analysis, which should overcome the uncertainty and complexity of the existing expansive soil swell-shrink evaluation index. The model describes the certainty and uncertainty of the amount of swelling and shrinkage in expansive clay using a vague-sets evaluation model, and generates a vague-set membership function with set pair analysis. On the basis of the application example and an evaluation of other methods, a comparative analysis shows that the model is effective and feasible when applied to the evaluation of the amount of expansive soil swelling and shrinkage. The results of the evaluation are accurate and the model is relatively simple to use.
