In order to support the conceptual ereative design of mechanical products, functional surface is used to express product gene formally. Functional surface model and product gene model were described mathematically, a product gene coding scheme with varied length and multilevel was proposed, the product gene formalization process based on functional surface was created and a design example was used to demonstrate the proposed method.
